About

The Junior Program is geared toward middle school, high school students and others, who are studying at an intermediate level of training. Admission to the Program is by audition only. The Program is ideal for students who have a special interest in contemporary dance performance, including those who may wish to become professional contemporary dancers.

The School focuses on developing dancers that are technically strong and artistically dynamic and open. To achieve this, our objective is to provide an individual approach to training each dancer. We also seek to instill a respect for the importance of the artistic work and for all participants.

The curriculum includes a variety of styles for students to achieve a well-rounded dance vocabulary. We offer Contemporary Technique, Ballet, Variations, Pointe, Hip Hop, Contemporary African (NAfro), Contemporary Workshop and Jazz/Lyrical.

Students also have the opportunity to perform many times throughout the year. First at our December Showing with a performance that includes highlights from the last year as well as a Technique Demonstration in Contemporary and Pointe. Dancers may choose to join our Hip Hop Troupe where they have the opportunity to compete. Finally we have our end of year performances which include two nights of shows and our Bill Evans Contemporary Dance Festival which is adjudicated by well-known Toronto dancer Darryl Tracey.

The Junior Program provides an excellent preparation for the Senior Professional Program. The Senior Professional Program of The School of Contemporary Dancers is recognized as a national arts training centre by the government of Canada and is funded by Canadian Heritage, the Manitoba Arts Council and the Winnipeg Arts Council. Graduates are performing with renowned companies and choreographers nationally and internationally. The Senior Professional Program is affiliated with the University of Winnipeg and leads to a B.A. Honours in Dance.
